three easy ways to use seaweed & why you should

For a lot of us, adding seaweed to our diet can seem weird and overwhelming. What do I do with it? How do I cook it? How much should I eat? What kind should I use? Where do I get it? How do I store it? So many questions, and so little time! 

We totally get it. We had to learn too, and we realized we haven't really shared some the simplest ways to begin using seaweed if you never have before. So we are going to answer some of these questions today and share with you a few very easy recipes! 

Here’s some super good news- it takes zero culinary skill to start adding seaweed to your diet and start reaping the benefits! 

Start simple by using dried Sugar Kelp Flakes or Dulse as a salt replacement or seasoning. Adding a pinch to your favorite foods each day gives you bonus umami flavor and a big dose of nutrients from the sea.

Okay, but sprinkle on what? 


Eggs! Yup, it’s that easy. Instead of salt, sprinkle a pinch of dried, flaked kelp or dulse on any style egg of your choice with breakfast and devour. For those just beginning their seaweed journey, we recommend this one often because eating eggs is common, and it makes them taste extra delicious in the morning.

This one doesn’t take any extra skill either, but avocados seem to be slightly more polarizing than eggs, although maybe this depends on where you live! But here at Nautical Farms, we love our Avo Toast. We’ll share with you how we eat it, but any combination of this delight will do just fine.

For our Avo Toast, we use gluten free bread from our local Juji's Kitchen. Take one slice of gluten free bread and spread with mashed avocado, garlic, and lemon juice. Add a few sliced grape tomato’s on top, and then sprinkle a small pinch of Sugar Kelp Flakes on top. Drizzle with oil and eat up!

Anyway, this is another one that doesn’t require culinary school or a recipe. Make a fresh salad of your choice - right now, we’re really digging locally grown spring mix, Maine wild blueberries harvested from our yard, and some pecans, but literally, any salad recipe is fantastic - and top that crisp delicious salad with a pinch or two of kelp flakes and drizzle with oil. 

Keep experimenting by adding a little more each time you use, or to different foods like beans, rice or quinoa. Once you start adding it to your food you won’t want to stop and will find yourself adding it to a little of everything. We do! 

Why should I start using seaweed?

We'll shout it from the rooftops until we can't anymore. Seaweed is incredible for you and for the environment! It is packed full of essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin's A, B, C, E, D, K, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, and iodine. It grows super fast, and while it goes it sequesters carbon from the atmosphere while supplying oxygen for us to breathe.

Where do I get it from?

If you live near a beach, you can harvest fresh seaweed at low tide if you know what you're looking for, but for those that don't or don't have a beach near by, we'll ship you edible seaweed grown off the cold, crips water off the coast of Maine.
