We harvested our first year’s crop last week! May 15th, to be exact. It was well, an adventurous learning experience if nothing else!
We began harvest that day early in the morning. It was cold, damp, slightly rainy and very foggy. Josh, Jake and myself loaded our Nautical Farms totes onto the boat and made the drive out to the farm. We started harvesting Jake’s half of our farm first, which to our surprise, had grown more kelp than we had anticipated due to our late seeding and conditions.
We separated the stipes (the stem of a kelp plant) from the crop as we harvested. We made our way to my half of the farm as the rain began to pick up, a sign that maybe we should have quit while we were ahead, because we soon after got our wheel of the boat caught up in the farm. Our harvest had come to a screeching halt.
We spent a few hours getting un-stuck before finally making our way home and getting our harvested crop into a refrigeration truck for the night. Josh and Jake made the drive to Southern Maine the next morning where our kelp would go on to be processed.
This year, we partnered and sold our harvest exclusively with AKUA to help make Kelp Jerky-the superfood snack of the sea come to life. Kelp Jerky is the first, and only nutrient dense snack made from kelp and mushrooms that is also vegan, non-GMO, and free of dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, and gluten.
